SELF EMPLOYMENT Ever since leaving School 1984 I have been a keen worker in the IT industry. Keeping up to date with developments and technical advances has always been one of my key factors. Contracting as a computer and network consultant for various small and large companies has proved beneficial to both myself and the companies involved. This involved private trade and set up of computer systems for companies and private individuals. It has taught me extensively about the market towards personal computers and systems available today. I have worked mostly with IBM compatible computers. I also have limited experience with Apple Macintosh, Silicon Graphics and VAX stations based on System 7 and UNIX operating systems. The following is a quick overview of tasks that were my responsibility:
  • Site infrastructure and comms. LAN & WAN Planning and design.
  • Firmware and Hardware upgrades to equipment when required.
  • Project work on the upgrade, installation and configuration of Cisco Routers, Cabletron equipment, new DEC Terminal Servers and Lantronics printer servers where required.
  • Integration of legacy and shared Thinwire cables to switched 10/100Mbps CAT5 structured network topology according to the MODTAP specification.
  • Decommission and re-commission of computers where required to incorporate the change in the cable structure without disruption to end users. (Liasing with users meetings)
  • Decommision of legacy network components (hubs, switches, routers, concentrators, multiplexors etc.) without disruption to the network.
  • General network design and forecast of expected problems.
  • Liasing with engineers on construction of new comms rooms and trunking installed for new structured cabled installation. Snagging errors in construction.
  • Setup and maintenance of Cabletron SPEL to monitor the Network components to give early warning of network problems. Update & keep of documentation in Various formats (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, SPEL, Visio and NetViz) to keep vital information (device names, drawings, IP address, ETH address, Serial numbers etc) up to date for monitor, asset tracking and maintenance contracts.
  • Change Controls to advise the required departments of relevant changes made to the network.
During this period I was also asked to help out on second line support on the MRPII project which was the biggest IT project running in the UK. This also included support to BPCS, setup of WinInstall for the auto installation of AS400 and BPCS applications and also the installation of SMS for complete automation of the installation process.
