Sailing at Shadwell
Sailing at Shadwell
Sunset at Tower Bridge
A few details
So what can you expect if you come along
on a
Tuesday?
Firstly a warm welcome from one of the club members, who will show you around and tell you where all the facilities are and provide protective sailing gear, all of which is included in the cost of the evening.
If you have never sailed a dinghy before
you will
be guided as to what is going on, so you won’t be left on your own. You
will
be matched with an experienced sailor, who will sail the dinghy and you
will be
the crew and will find yourself helping to sail the boat. If you are
more
experienced, perhaps you already have an RYA dinghy qualification, then
you may
well be helming the dinghy.
The Thames is an exciting place to sail,
but can
only be enjoyed if you sail safely and safety is of paramount
importance at
Shadwell. All Tuesday evening sailing sessions are accompanied by two
safety
boats and are always conducted under the watchful eye of a senior RYA
dinghy
instructor. All wet weather gear and bouyancy aids are provided, but we
do
advise you to bring a spare set of clothes and certainly spare shoes,
as any
item of clothing can get wet out on the river.
Depending on the time of year, tide and weather, your sailing can last from 90 minutes right up to four hours, the latter especially in mid summer. After sailing we adjourn to our “club house” aka The Prospect of Whitby pub, which is just next door, to hear all the unlikely excuses for the evenings events!
