Greetings, I've recently become the owner of Bosun #3.  I trained to RYA2 with RNSC at Whale Island on the Bosun, fell in love with them, so when I saw one on offer I couldn't resist.  I have some paperwork with it, but obviously I'm very interested in it's history.
The dinghy is in fair condition, but does require some work.  It's pale blue with white sails, and the date built must speak for itself!!  It is presently residing on my driveway in Southampton, it's previous owner was at New Milton.
I've no experience in boat restoration, and would very much appreciate any contacts local to me that might assist with advice.
In the meantime I'll keep exploring the internet!!    Regards  Bob Nicklen

Comment from Peter Stacey: Bosun 3 - As the class was designed by Ian Proctor for the Services it was either a prototype or a Service Boat I would guess.

EX SEA CADETS

I would love to give you some more details of my boat, but I obtained it as a write off from the Sea Cadets. As you can imagine all the bits and bobs that came with the boat have been mixed up and changed around in the sea cadet's stores. Most of the sailing equipment for the boat, I have obtained through my own sea cadet contacts. The front buoyancy tank where the boat number is normally stamped, has at some time been removed and the sails, as explained earlier, are not the originals therefore making identification nearly impossible. If you tell me whom I could speak to regarding registration, it would help me a lot. I can however give you the following: - Owner Mark Roberts Colour Dark Blue Sail Colour Dark Blue Present Location Brandy Hole YC, River Crouch, Essex. Owner's e-mail mark.roberts21@virgin.net Date of build Being an ex-Sea Cadet boat, I can only presume its old!! Previous Owner Ministry of Defence. Date Purchased Feb 1999 Comments The boat creates a lot of interest from old service people who learnt to sail in one. Altogether a nice boat that goes well although it's not rigged to its best yet due to parts of the rig coming from different sources. I will keep a regular check on your site and indeed if any of your members could offer tips on rigging of the boat without spending a fortune, I again would be grateful. If you would like to have a photo of the boat, please let me know and I will E-mail you one.

Blue Bosun - Ex Sea scouts boat, possibly used on the sea. Laid at Bowmoor Sailing Club, Lechlade, Glos for three years with a huge hole underneath. Boat was repaired by current owner. Now fitted out with reasonable kit. Since being repaired and fitted out it has attended the 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 Bosun Nationals as the oldest boat in the competition. Looking for more information pre 1996. Currently in use employed as a training boat carrying out RYA level 2 and Young Sailors Courses. Proved to be very popular with the students. Recent upgrade Aug 2003 include new seats, (English Chestnut, plus central kicker / centre board controls and big spinnaker bags).Owners Email webmaster@bosundinghy.co.uk

Discovered the Bosun Dinghy Class Association site this morning on Goggle by typing Bosun+Dinghy!. I served in the RN from 1956 to 1976 before transferring to the Royal Australian Navy in which I served from 1976 to 1998. From 1990 to 1995 I was the Naval Reserve Cadet Liaison Officer here in Queensland and from 1995 to 1998 the Commanding Officer of Training Ship CENTAUR (a NRC Unit in Maleny). This Unit sails 3 Bosuns (and 3 Corsairs). The Bosuns were built in Garden Island Dockyard in 1966, 68 and 69 with Hull Numbers 1513, 1540 and 1577. A number of Cadet Units still sail Bosuns although they are getting fewer as the years roll on. Our three are in very good condition and sailed regularly both on our local lake, local rivers and adjacent sheltered bays. We have also enjoyed Adventure Training sailing in Moreton Bay, (slightly more open waters) with 20 - 30 km day sails and overnight camping. Recently one of our Bosuns came 3rd in the Maroochy Head of the River Regatta Rigging has been slightly modified over time with, for example, the horse arrangement being of man made "Spectra" rope. Also the main sheet runs from a block and becket on the outboard end of the boom down to the traveller back up to the boom, along the boom to another block and then down to the deck between the toe straps to a ratchet block. This works very well and gives the mainsheet hand something to do - when sailing three-up - but does not allow the main to be easily furled. Unfortunately the original (Bakelite?) jib leads have long since disappeared so a swiveling deadeye and cam cleat is used to good effect. Also the traditional blue sails have been replaced with white but still carry the Bosun logo.
Yours aye, John Wenban - ex LCDR GLSU
